It really just depends on the lighting and what equipment you're using. Obviously, you want to try to use as low an effective ASA (ISO) as you can. Also depends if you'll be shooting through the fence or unobstructed (ring or over top). If you can, I'd say try to get to 1/500 or faster shutter at f4. Adjust your ISO accordingly and then check some test shots to make sure you can live with whatever level of noise you're getting. I'm a Canon guy, so I can only speak for their gear. The 1D Mark II and Mark IIn do very well at ISO 1600. The 1D Mark III looks great at ISO 3200. The 1D Mark IV looks great at even ISO 8000. For the 5D and 5D Mark II, I would stick to ISO 3200. I haven't seen much at ISO 6400 for those bodies to comment on how useable the shots are.

Josh, I am a big fan of your work. I am shooting a small event in Reno and wanted to know what ISO and shutter speed you are having success with.

I appreciate your input,

Hey Josh,

I've been following your blog for a while. I'm very interested in pursuing a career in photography. I'm also a big MMA fan, which is how I found your blog. I was wondering if you had some free time this weekend so I can pick your brain about your career path.

Sadly, I have. Ambien did nothing for me, neither with nor without alcohol mixed in.

Dude, you really need to try some ambien, it will put you out for 6-8 hours and you wake up feeling like a million bucks. I was on it for about 2 months a couple years back, best sleep I've ever had in my life.

I think the most important part for me is having the right equipment and knowing how to use it. Knowing the sport certainly helps though.

Sounds like you were one of the lucky ones who found your niche early on. Acknowledging that you need both to succeed, which do you think is more responsible for your own personal success: natural talent behind the camera, or knowing the sport well enough to time the shots perfectly?

Have fun tonight! (I'm rooting for Griffin.)
